Helping Parents Adjust to Assisted Living

Most aging people want to hold on to their independence for as long as possible, however, it is not always what is best for them.  It becomes the responsibility of the adult children ensure that their parents are properly cared for, comfortable, and secure.  Making the decision and finding an assisted living facility that is right for the aging parent as well as the other family members can be very difficult and emotional.  Many sons and daughters of aging parents are met with obstinacy or even hostility when they approach their parents with the possible need for assisted living. Being understanding and compassionate to how the aging parent is feeling is mandatory.  Many aging parents are afraid they will become a burden to their children, or become forgotten. Focus on the positives of moving to an assisted living facility instead of the need brought on by poor health and age. You should drive with your parents to look at the facility, and take a tour of its amenities. Many of them have restaurant style dining rooms, classes and clubs to join, special shows and speakers to watch, and more. Convincing an aging parent to move to an assisted living facility is no easy task. You have to understand their fears and be sensitive to their changing needs. By starting early and keeping open lines of communication, everyone involved should be able to make the transition to assisted living smoothly.
